Rundum Artist-Run Space

Vestlus kunstnikega / artist talk:

Pressiteade

Teose nimi viitab segamini hierarhia teadvusele - nähtusele, mida on ulatuslikult uurinud Dr. Hofstadter. Nad said kogemata tulemuseks samalaadsed tingimused nagu varajastes video tagasiside eksperimentides. Oma suletud loomuse tõttu on need katsetused huvitaval kombel väga tundlikud ümbritseva keskkonna ja tehnilistele parameetrite suhtes. Neid parameetreid võib vaadelda kui tehnoloogilist zeitgeist’i.

Näitus on avatud vaid kuus päeva, 31. juulist 8. augustini.
Lahtiolekuajad: R-L, T-N kell 14-18. Okasroosikese loss, Uus 19

Press release

On Thursday, the 31st of August at 6 p.m. Karolien Chromiak ja Dennis Ramaekers (BEL) open their exhibition “Tangled Hierarchy” in Rundum artist-run space (Okasroosikese loss, 19, Uus Street, Tallinn).
On the same evening at 7 p.m. an artist talk will be held to introduce the artist’s work and to discuss also about their art space 53m³ and self-organizing in the art world.

Tangled Hierarchy
A beamer is directly connected to a video camera; these two are pointed straight at each other, with a thin plastic sheet between them. Instead of creating the usual “tunnel to infinity” effect you would also encounter when pointing two mirrors at each other, the plastic sheet breaks the light emitted by the beamer. This leads to a seemingly chaotic moving pattern of colors.
The name of the work refers to tangled hierarchy consciousness; a phenomenon which has being extensively studied by Doctor Hofstadter. We came across his work while trying to create a video equivalent of audio feedback (a more known form of feedback looping). Inadvertently we recreated similar conditions as were present in these early video feedback experiments. Interestingly, because of their closed nature, these feedback loops are highly sensitive to their environment and technical parameters. These technical parameters can be seen as a technological zeitgeist. It can thus be stated that the same experiment is subject to its direct environment and a larger evolving technological environment (assuming one uses contemporary means).
The installation is best described as a set of materials and tools, to be used in accordance with the exhibition space. The high sensitivity of the governing principles of the feedback loop towards its changing surrounding space, make each showing of the work unique and reactive to its surroundings.

Karolien Chromiak’s work is centered around the capturing of light, be it through photography, video or installations. On the other hand Dennis Ramaekers‘s oeuvre contains numerous light producing sculptures or installations. “Tangled Hierarchy” is basically a rapid interaction between light creating and light capturing devices.

Karolien Chromiak (1989) lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. She's active as an (audiovisual) artist and is a co-founder of the art space 53m³.
Dennis Ramaekers (1987) also lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. He's active as an artist and producer. He is a co-founder of the art space 53m³.

The exhibition is open only for six days, 31st of July until 8th of August.
Opening times: Fri-Sat, Tue-Thu 2 p.m.-6 p.m. Okasroosikese loss, 19, Uus Street

The exhibition is supported by: STROOMbeurs, Limburg
